Supervan Ltd car hire Frequently asked questions FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) when hiring a van or commercial vehicle

Supervan Ltd has a huge range of vans and commercial vehicles available to hire; if you have any specific questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact us, but you may find the below FAQs helpful.

What is included in the price of a rental vehicle?

Our hire charges include the vehicle itself, which are all less than three years old and come with air conditioning, power steering, central locking and a CD player as standard, as well as fully comprehensive insurance. In addition, all of our rental vehicles are covered by roadside assistance to ensure your peace of mind.

Your chosen van will also be cleaned and maintained to the highest standard both before and after your hire period as part of our ongoing service.

How old do I have to be to rent a van?

You must be between the age of 25 and 70 in order to hire a van or commercial vehicle under our insurance cover. You must also have held a full UK driving licence for at least two years.

What documents do I need to hire a van with Supervan?

You must produce a full, valid UK driving licence; it must be your original licence as photocopies will not be accepted. If you hold a photocard licence, we will also need your paper counterpart.

Supervan Ltd will also require a minimum of two forms of additional identification, such as your passport, utility bills and/or bank statements and corresponding credit or debit cards.

Overseas customers looking to rent a commercial vehicle – please contact Supervan Rental direct.

What deposit will I have to pay?

You will be asked to pay an excess – or deposit – of £650 by credit or debit card. This covers our insurance policy excess and will be the maximum amount you will be required to pay in case of an accident.

This deposit is fully refundable upon safe and undamaged return of the commercial vehicle.

What is the largest commercial vehicle I can legally drive on a standard UK driving licence?

If you hold a full standard UK driving licence, you are entitled to drive any of our vans and commercial up to our 3.5 tonne Luton Van. However, in order to hire Supervan Ltd’s 7.5 tonne Box Lorry, you must have the higher category C1 on your driving licence.

Please note that if you hold an automatic driving licence, you will only be able to drive our range of automatic vans.

How long can I hire a van for?

You may only need a commercial vehicle for a single day; alternatively, you might be looking to rent a van on a contract hire basis. Supervan offers extremely competitive rates on a wide range of hire periods, from one day and weekend hire to monthly and long term rental and contract hire.

Can you arrange collection and delivery?

To make your commercial vehicle hire process even easier, Supervan Ltd offers a delivery and collection service throughout Essex (charges apply). We provide this service across the county, including Brentwood, Chelmsford, Harlow, Upminster and Billericay.

Superbike Rental can you hire a motorbike with points on your licence

Can you hire a van with points of your licence?

Most people will be aware that you are convicted of a motoring offence, the courts can not only fine you but also ‘endorse’ your driving licence with penalty points. However, what you may not realise is that there are many different endorsement codes – or types of points – which will be added to the counterpart document of your photocard licence. There is no hiding these points, so it is vital that you know of any limitations or restrictions that may come with attempting to hire a van.

Each endorsement has a code and its own penalty points that are on a scale of 1 to 11. They will also have to stay on your driving licence for a set amount of time.

What type of endorsement codes are there?

Accident offences are coded as ‘AC’ and include failure to stop after an accident, and failure to report or provide particulars on an accident within 24 hours. These offence come with 5 to 10 penalty points and must remain on your licence for four years from the date of the offence.

Disqualified driver (BA) offences must also stay on your driving licence for four years. Earning you 6 penalty points apiece, these offences include driving whilst disqualified by the court and attempting to drive whilst disqualified.

Codes CD10, CD20 and CD30 range from 3 to 9 penalty points and cover minor careless driving offences. As above, they remain on your licence for four years. Codes CD40, CD50, CD60 and CD70, CD80 and CD90 are far more serious, covering death by dangerous driving, which will also carry a court conviction.

Other more serious penalty codes include:

DD10 – Reckless/Dangerous Driving (causing serious injury by dangerous driving)
DR10 – Drink and Drugs (driving or attempting to drive with alcohol level above limit)
IN10 – Insurance Offences (using a vehicle uninsured against third party risks)
MS50 – Miscellaneous Offences (motor racing on the highway)
MW10 – Motorway Offences (contravention of special roads regulations (excluding speed limits)
PC10 – Pedestrian Crossing (undefined contravention of pedestrian crossing regulations)
SP30 – Speed Limits (exceeding statutory speed limit on a public road)

For a full list of endorsement codes and penalty points you may want to check out the gov.uk website.

Can I still hire a vehicle?

When it comes to hiring a van, Supervan Ltd is – as all hire companies are – restricted by our insurance company when it comes to renting vans and other vehicles to drivers with points on their licence. We are able to hire vans, cars and motorbikes to people with no more than 6 points on their licence; anything more and your request would have to be referred to our insurer.

The types of penalty points on your licence will then be assessed. If your offences are fairly minor such as speeding or traffic light violations you may still be able to hire a van, car or motorbike from Supervan Ltd; however, if you have a drink driving conviction under 5 years old or you have previously been disqualified from driving, it is highly unlikely that we will be able to insure you and therefore supply you with a rental vehicle.

Are you unsure about your ability to hire a vehicle with points on your driving licence? Please call Supervan Ltd today to discuss your needs and circumstances and we will do all we can to help.

Supervan Ltd Brentwood hiring a car for the summer holidays

Summer safety driving tips

Now the Summer holidays are well and truly upon us, which means our already congested roads and motorways have been and will be even busier as families travel to the seaside and other British tourist destinations to enjoy the warmer weather. Here at Supervan Ltd, we have seen a sharp increase in car rentals as families from abroad venture out of the cities to explore the UK’s beautiful countryside and coasts.

However, the higher temperatures, heavy traffic and long journeys can place extra – and sometimes unwanted – demands on both drivers and their vehicles. Just as you should be prepared during potentially treacherous conditions the winter can bring, summer has its own risks, so it is important that you plan and prepare to reduce the risk of an accident or breakdown.

Check your tyres

High temperatures mean hot roads. And hot roads can aggravate any existing damage to your tyre’s rubber. Make sure you check your tyre pressure and their condition, as under-inflation can actually increase heat and cause friction, potentially leading to punctures and blow-outs. And remember that if you are taking your caravan or trailer tent on holiday with you, that they also have tyres that could cause problems if left unchecked.

Check your cooling system

It’s not just tyres that can be adversely affected by the hot weather; your cooling system can also be put under pressure when exposed to high temperatures. Check your vehicle’s coolant reservoir and keep an eye out for wet or white staining on coolant hoses as this can be a sign that your hose is leaking.

A good way to ensure that your cooling fan is working as it should is to allow your vehicle’s engine to idle for five to ten minutes. The cooling fan should automatically cut in – if it doesn’t, it is recommended that you take it to a professional to check that everything is in working order.

Check your fluid

During hot weather, we need water to stay alert, active and prevent dehydration. Your vehicle is exactly the same – without the necessary fluids, it can’t get you from A to B and the last thing you want is to breakdown in the middle of nowhere in 30°C temperatures.

Before going on any trip, you should make sure that your car or van’s fluids are topped up, including fuel, engine oil, windscreen wash and engine coolant.

And of course, if you are going on a long journey, the key is to water and feed yourself and your passengers to minimise the risk of tiredness. It is recommended that you schedule in a fifteen minute break every two hours; why not plan to stop somewhere for a picnic in the sun?

Air conditioning

The recent heatwave has resulted in our vehicles’ air conditioning to be tested like never before. If you are planning on renting a car or van, you can be sure of a comfortable, cool journey with Supervan Ltd – every single one of our vehicles come with air conditioning!

However, air conditioning can come with a price – namely to your pocket. To save on fuel, it is recommended that you turn the air conditioning off once the inside of your car is at a comfortable temperature. In addition, open windows cause extra drag, so it is always worth using the air vents when travelling on motorways. And of course, there is no point in having your air conditioning on if your windows or doors are open.

Avoid the glare

Sunshine is a welcome sight to most of us, but harsh sun glare can cause accidents. Ensure that you have a pair of sunglasses in your vehicle and clean your windscreen on a regular basis to remove those smears that can catch the glare and impair your vision whilst driving.

When renting a car or van from Supervan Ltd, you can be assured that your chosen vehicle has been thoroughly cleaned, checked and maintained. However, if you are planning a long journey or hiring a vehicle on a long-term basis, it is vital that you prepare both yourself and your vehicle for those summer drives. By following these simple tips, you will enjoy a much safer, more enjoyable trip.

Supervan Ltd hire a van to move home moving house hire a van

Why hire a van when moving home?

Hire a van or use a removals company… what are the advantages of renting your own van when moving home?

You can hire a van for all sorts of reasons; you may have to transport goods, or decided to clear your shed or garage. You might be carrying out renovations and prefer to take the rubbish to the tip in a van rather than going through the rigmarole of booking a skip. In the UK, you can hire vans of all shapes and sizes to suit your needs, with most of them available on a daily, weekend or weekly basis. You can even hire certain vans by the hour if you only have a single load or a very short trip.

But what about moving home? Is it a good idea to hire a van or would it be better to use a professional removals company? There are benefits and drawbacks to both, the obvious ones being:

• Hiring a van is the significantly cheaper option
• A removals company knows exactly what they’re doing, meaning less stress for you
• Hiring a van means you have total flexibility of when you move and how long it will take
• A removals company will have all the necessary packing materials, equipment and insurance to keep your belongings safe in transit

‘Move-it-yourself’

Hiring a van is certainly going to be the cheapest option when moving home. If you are planning a small move to a property quite close to your existing home you are probably talking about spending £750 on a removals company, in comparison to hiring a tail lift van for about £160 for two days. Yet there are things you should consider in order to make your move as simple and hassle-free as possible.

Bear in mind that if you opt to ‘move-it-yourself’ that is exactly what you’ll be doing. There won’t be any experts waiting in the wings to help you pack or load and unload the removals van. You will have to buy your own packing materials and ensure that any precious items are carefully packed and protected during transit.

Unlike a removals company, you won’t have any goods in transit insurance, so if anything breaks, you’ll either have to learn to live without it or spend money to replace it. How many times have you heard about people accidentally closing the boot on their flat screen television?

You’ll need help

Unless you are a large – and strong – family, you will probably have to rope friends and relatives in to help you move. Bear in mind that unless you are planning on hiring a van and moving on a weekend, you might struggle to find people able to take a day off work to help.

The majority of us will have a lot of belongings to move so you may have to do a couple of trips to and from houses before you can call it a day, which means that if you are moving hundreds of miles away, the best option will be a removals company.

It takes planning and teamwork to ensure that things are put in the hire van on one side, taken out carefully on the other and put in the right place. Label your belongings carefully or you will be spending a lot of time manoeuvring around boxes, furniture and clothing that have been dumped in the nearest available space rather than being placed in the rooms they belong.

Make sure you park as closely as possible to your property to minimise both damage to your goods and tiredness. You’ll want to load large furniture first followed by any other furniture. It goes without saying that heavy boxes should be placed at the bottom, with lighter boxes on top. Certain fragile items may be better transported in a car, limiting the possibility of breakages.

Have you booked your hire van?

Don’t simply assume that you can call a hire company and get a suitable van for the day you want; many hire companies will only have a small selection of the larger vans in their fleet so make sure you book your hire van well in advance.

Get used to the hire vehicle

Not many of us will have driven such a large vehicle on a regular basis, so it is always worth taking it out for a test run after you pick it up from your chosen hire company. Bear in mind any low bridges or narrow roads that you may come across and if necessary, plan an alternative route.

Always pay attention when reversing into a parking space or manoeuvring into narrow roads or tight spaces and pay attention to your mirrors and any blind spots; if possible, ask someone to act as a guide to help.

Supervan Ltd Brentwood van hire car hire tips in keeping cool this summer

Top tips for safe and comfortable driving in the summer weather

The summer is here and although the sun has been a little shy to appear, the weather – and your car or van and its passengers – this week has been heating up.

With this in mind, Supervan Ltd shares its top tips on keeping safe, cool and comfortable when driving in hot weather.

Most modern vehicles come with air conditioning as standard; Supervan Ltd’s wide range of quality vans and quality cars all have air conditioning, meaning that you can revel in a cool blast of air whenever the temperature becomes too much to bear. But remember that despite air con, very hot weather can result in irritability, drowsiness and dehydration so it is always worthwhile taking along some cold drinks in a cool-bag for you and your passengers if you’re planning any longer trips.

Unfortunately, air conditioning can’t lower the temperature of an overheating vehicle, so make sure you check the water levels and ensure that your radiator’s coolant is topped up before setting off. Your tyres should also be checked as air expands when hot and your tyre pressure can change. Check the pressure and inflate when your tyres are cold. And don’t fill your fuel tank up to the brim as expansion from the heat can cause a leak.

Sunny weather in the UK and traffic jams often go hand in hand, as half the population flock to the coast for a bit of sun, sea and sand. To avoid roasting in a standstill queue for hours, ask a passenger to check real time UK traffic updates in order to avoid traffic jam hotspots.

You may be planning a longer journey and want to break it up with a couple of stops. However, please remember to think before you park. Leave your vehicle in the strong sunshine and you will return to the equivalent of an oven on wheels, so always try to find a shaded area. Plus, pets should never be left in a car during hot weather; we have sadly heard of many cases of pets dying of heat exhaustion and dehydration in hot cars. Please ensure that if you are taking your pet with you, you provide them with plenty of ventilation and water, and plan for regular exercise breaks during your trip.

You may automatically assume that you will be using your windscreen wipers and screen wash more in the winter to ward off rain and snow, but in reality, the hot weather brings its own visibility challenges. How often have you been driving in the summer and ended up with a windscreen full of squished insects? Always keep your screen wash topped up and check your wiper blades for splits or damage before you travel.

Located in Brentwood, Essex, Supervan Ltd ensures that all of our vehicles – whether vans, cars or motorbikes – are fully maintained and serviced, ready for summer or winter. If you are planning a journey and are considering hiring a high quality, affordable vehicle, then contact us here Supervan Ltd today on 01277 366602.
